PASSIVE VOICE


  1. Definition of Passive Voice


Passive Voice is used when the focus is on the action.
it is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action.


Example : My handphone was broken by him


  1. Form of Passive Voice 


Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs 


Example : A letter was   written
        to be  PP (Past Participle).


When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following :
  • The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
  • The finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)
  • The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)

  1. Simple Present Tense
Active : Humaira makes a banana cake
Passive : A banana cake is made by Humaira


  1. Simple Past
Active : Humaira made a banana cake
passive : A banana cake was made by Humaira


  1. Present Continuous
Active : Humaira is making a banana cake
Passive : A banana cake is being made by Humaira



  1. Past Continuous
Active : Humaira was making a banana cake
Passive : A banana cake was being made by Humaira


  1. Present Perfect
Active : Humaira have made a banana cake
Passive : A banana cake has been made by Humaira


  1. Past Perfect
Active : Humaira had made a banana cake
Passive : A banana cake had been made by Humaira


  1. Simple Future
Active : Humaira will make a banana cake
Passive : A banana cake will be made by Humaira


  1. Future Continuous
Active : Humaira is going to make a banana cake
Passive : A banana cake is going to be made by Humaira


  1. Future Perfect 
Active : Humaira will have made a banana cake
Passive : A banana cake will have been made by Humaira


  1. Modal 
Active : Humaira must make a banana cake
Passive : A banana cake must be made by Humaira
